LOS ANGELES — Michelle Bagnato uses her outreach and public speaking skills, originally developed in her film and TV producer jobs, to help create healthy ecosystems and communities in Los Angeles.  The environmental movement is lucky to have Bagnato. Her bright personality, positive attitude, and willingness to teach make environmental education stress-free. She instantly puts her students at ease.

On Saturday, May 5, Bagnato facilitated free workshops at the Green City Fair, an event that brought the greater Los Angeles community together to advance sustainability.  Bagnato’s informative workshop showed attendees how to maintain trees on their property or in their neighborhoods. She taught her audience about appropriate soil heights, placement of trees, and how to choose tree species based on climate. Throughout her speech, she encouraged those attending the event to plant native species.

Bagnato’s 15-minute presentation (in both Spanish and English) was very hands-on. She literally dug in (with a shovel)!

She also used props, one of the most memorable being ‘tree-in-a-suitcase.’ This information-packed display shows optimal soil height, how to place woodchips, and how to create a berm. A berm is a small mounded hill of soil which redirects water drainage, and it plays an important role in maintaining adequate soil moisture.

Attendees were rewarded for their interest, patience and time. Los Angeles residents had the opportunity to receive seven free trees delivered to their home, courtesy of the Million Trees LA initiative! Nonresidents could take home a beautiful oak tree each.

Sierra Club Green Home values the work of engaged environmentalists like Michelle Bagnato. If you are interested in greening your life, look for events where experts will gladly share their knowledge with you!
