SAN DIEGO — Later this month, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will share his thoughts on climate change alongside two distinguished professors at the University of California, San Diego. Their discussion will be streaming live April 18 at 9:30 a.m. PDT.

The Dalai Lama has long emphasized connections between human rights and environmental issues. As someone living in exile since 1959 and working to bring peace and independence to his native Tibet, he encourages others to respect people and the natural world.

In the past several years the Dalai Lama has highlighted the urgent need to address global warming. He expressed deep concern about disruptions to the fresh water supply of his people in Tibet and to others across the planet.

These concerns are shaping both his public and private conversations with leaders around the world. In 2010, WikiLeaks released a diplomatic cable describing a meeting between the Dalai Lama and the U.S. Ambassador to India in 2009. His Holiness suggested action on climate change and environmental threats in Tibet must take priority, even if it means putting it ahead of Tibet’s political agenda.

In public addresses, the Dalai Lama has urged audiences from Australia to India to take personal and collective action to help address the challenges that people around the world are facing. He suggests “taking care of the environment should be part of our daily life.”

Soon he will be taking his message to Southern California. Joining him at UC San Diego will be two scientists from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, both well-known experts on climate change. Professors Veerabhadran Ramanathan and Richard C. J. Somerville will join the Dalai Lama for a panel titled, “The Global Impact of Climate Change: Balance through Universal Responsibility, Compassion and Human Consciousness.”

Tickets are sold out, but Sierra Club Green Home will attend and share a report for anyone unable to tune in on Wednesday, April 18.
